The Examination and Evaluation system at the Punjab Institute of Oriental & Indian Languages (PIOIL) is designed to be comprehensive, fair, and transparent. It assesses students’ understanding of core concepts, analytical skills, and research aptitude, adhering strictly to the guidelines prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the affiliating university.
Examination Schedule Overview
PIOIL follows a Semester System with two major examination periods per academic year:
- Odd Term Examinations: Held in December (for Semesters I & III).
- Even Term Examinations: Held in May/June (for Semesters II & IV).
1. Pre-Examination Formalities
| Activity | Timeline | Responsibility |
| Eligibility Verification | 1 month prior to exams | Department Heads & Academic Section |
| Examination Form Submission | Announced 6 weeks prior to exams | Students (mandatory submission of forms and fees) |
| Issue of Admit Cards | 1 week prior to exams | Examination Branch (Digital & Physical copies) |
| Sessional Marks Submission | 2 weeks prior to exams | Course Instructors |
Evaluation Pattern (Continuous Comprehensive Assessment)
The final grade for every theoretical and practical course is determined by combining the performance in Internal Assessment and the End-Term Examination.
1. Internal Assessment (30% Weightage)
This component focuses on continuous evaluation throughout the semester and is managed by the respective course instructor.
- Mid-Semester Examination: 10%
- Assignments/Presentations: 10%
- Attendance & Participation: 5%
- Quizzes/Class Tests: 5%
2. End-Term Examination (70% Weightage)
- Format: A comprehensive written examination covering the entire course syllabus.
- Duration: Typically 3 hours for theoretical papers.
- Conduction: Managed centrally by the PIOIL Examination Branch and monitored by the Controller of Examinations.
Grading System
PIOIL uses a 10-point Letter Grade System. The following table illustrates the equivalent grade points and qualitative remarks:
| Letter Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Percentage Range | Remark |
| O | 10 | 90% – 100% | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | 80% – 89% | Excellent |
| A | 8 | 70% – 79% | Very Good |
| B+ | 7 | 60% – 69% | Good |
| B | 6 | 50% – 59% | Above Average |
| C | 5 | 45% – 49% | Average (Passing Grade) |
| F | 0 | Below 45% | Fail/Re-appear |
| Ab | 0 | – | Absent |
Note: The minimum passing grade in any course is Grade ‘C’ (45%).
Calculation of SGPA and CGPA
The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) are calculated based on the following formulae:
$$SGPA = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} (C_i \times GP_i)}{\sum_{i=1}^{n} C_i}$$
Where $C_i$ is the number of credits for the $i^{th}$ course, and $GP_i$ is the Grade Point obtained in the $i^{th}$ course.
Post-Examination Procedures
1. Re-evaluation and Scrutiny
- Students who are dissatisfied with their results may apply for Re-evaluation or Scrutiny within 15 days of the result declaration.
- The application must be submitted along with the requisite fee to the Examination Branch. The decision of the Re-evaluation Committee is final.
2. Re-appear / Compartment
- Students failing to secure the minimum passing grade (‘C’) in a course must re-appear in that paper during the subsequent offering of the examination (typically in the corresponding semester of the next academic year).
- A maximum of three attempts is permitted to clear any course.
3. Unfair Means (UFM)
- Any student found using unfair means during the examination will be dealt with severely as per the Institute’s strict anti-malpractice policy. This may lead to the cancellation of the paper, semester result, or expulsion from the Institute.
