Student Guidelines

🎓 Student Guidelines and Code of Conduct

Welcome to the Punjab Institute of Oriental & Indian Languages (PIOIL). These guidelines are designed to ensure a focused, respectful, and academically sound environment for all members of the Institute community. All registered students are required to read, understand, and adhere to these regulations.

I. Academic Integrity & Ethics

Maintaining academic honesty is paramount at PIOIL. Any violation will lead to strict disciplinary action.

1. Plagiarism and Cheating

  • Definition: Presenting the work, ideas, words, or data of another source as one’s own, without proper citation and attribution. This includes self-plagiarism (submitting the same work for multiple courses).
  • Consequences: Any assignment, project, or thesis found to contain plagiarism will be subject to grading penalties, ranging from a zero grade on the assignment to expulsion from the program, as determined by the Academic Council.
  • Guidance: Students must properly use footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies following the style guide prescribed by the department (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style or MLA).

2. Examination Misconduct

  • Using unauthorized materials, electronic devices, or communication during examinations is strictly prohibited and constitutes Unfair Means (UFM).
  • Students found engaging in UFM will face penalties as per the [Examination & Evaluation Page], which may include being debarred from the current and future exams.

II. Attendance and Leave Policy

Regular and timely attendance is compulsory for all students registered in coursework programs (M.A. and PGD).

  • Minimum Requirement: Students must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in each individual course (theory and practical) to be eligible to sit for the End-Term Examinations.
  • Medical Leave: Students seeking leave on medical grounds must submit a valid medical certificate from a registered practitioner to the Student Welfare Office within three days of returning to the Institute.
  • Shortage of Attendance: Students with attendance between 65% and 75% may be conditionally allowed to appear for exams after paying a prescribed penalty fee. Students falling below 65% will be automatically debarred from the end-term examination.

III. Institute Code of Conduct

All students are ambassadors of PIOIL and must conduct themselves with dignity and respect both on and off campus.

1. Respectful Behavior

  • Treat all faculty, staff, fellow students, and visitors with courtesy and respect, regardless of gender, religion, caste, or background.
  • Bullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), or discrimination in any form is strictly forbidden. Instances should be reported immediately to the Student Welfare Office or the Anti-Ragging/Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).

2. Damage to Property

  • Students are responsible for the proper use of Institute property, including classrooms, library books, laboratory equipment, and hostel facilities.
  • Any willful damage to property will result in disciplinary action and financial recovery of the damages from the concerned student(s).

3. Dress Code

  • Students are expected to dress appropriately and modestly, maintaining a level of formality consistent with the academic environment of the Institute.

IV. Use of Facilities

1. Library and Archives

  • Students must adhere to the rules specified by the Chief Librarian regarding borrowing limits, return dates, and conduct within the reading room and archival section.
  • Handling of rare manuscripts and archival materials is strictly governed by the Preservation Officer’s instructions.

2. IT and Internet Usage

  • Institute IT resources (Wi-Fi, computer labs) must be used solely for academic and research purposes.
  • The viewing or downloading of inappropriate or illegal content is prohibited.

Disciplinary Action

Failure to comply with any of the above guidelines may lead to the following disciplinary actions, depending on the severity of the offense:

  1. Verbal or Written Warning.
  2. Monetary Fine.
  3. Suspension from the Institute for a specified period.
  4. Expulsion from the Institute and cancellation of registration.
